Texas erects bigger version of beloved state fair icon Big Tex in the middle of the ocean. His shadow now looms over The Lone Star State, and stretches across the US and Mexico, dragging along with it Texas ideals that stem from false lore—lore that turned scathing, power-hungry white men into romantic, God-fearing adventurers. But their plight hardly measures up to those they did and will continue to destroy along the way. All hail Big Tex, for it does not appear he is going away any time soon. And just because you don’t live in Texas doesn’t mean he’s not coming for you.

In honor of the Austin Studio Tours, I animated and moderated a conversation with five other members of the art community. We covered topics like the fear of being reduced to a database entry, where to find studio space that accommodates chainsaws, and how to avoid being scammed by tech companies...all while appearing as bizarre, animated versions of ourselves.

Since Tessa was unable to go to Japan this year, for her birthday I made her a magnetic book that captures Tokyo’s bizarre street/club contrast. Cutouts of Tessa and some other Tessa/Japanese-inspired magnetic friends get to explore the scenes. This was a very fun excuse to learn more about Japanese art and culture...AND be ridiculous.

My brother and I decided to collaborate on a 1-minute-long animation. Here is what we came up with.

Over the years, I’ve realized the best way to connect with my dad is through moving images. This year, I made him an animated music video to Pink Floyd’s “Pigs on the Wing 2,” a song that we both relate to.

My mom says he watches the video again and again, searching for meaning: an abstracted way to make sense of our own relationship, or at least that’s how I felt when I made it.

When I draw it starts with one idea and then more complex ones emerge, like this goose and his love for a plastic flamingo. He’s trying to imitate his perception of flamingoes by balancing on one foot, but these lawn flamingos don’t even have feet, just a wire sticking in the ground. He doesn’t love this plastic lawn flamingo, he loves his idea of her. And he’ll put himself on the line to impress what he thinks is her. Love can be so complicated.
